Delhi Traffic Police deploy ‘AC Helmets’ as heatwave pushes temperatures beyond 45°C

As temperatures across Delhi-NCR crossed 45 degrees Celsius, the Delhi Traffic Police have introduced specialised “AC helmets” and portable cooling devices to help personnel cope with the severe heatwave during long outdoor duty hours.
Under a newly launched pilot project, traffic police officers deployed at major intersections and busy roundabouts, including the Three Murti roundabout, have been equipped with solar-assisted cooling helmets, handheld fans, table fans, hydration kits and temporary shaded booths.
The initiative aims to protect personnel from extreme heat stress while managing traffic during prolonged eight-hour shifts under direct sunlight.
According to police officials, the specially designed AC helmets use battery-powered cooling systems to regulate temperature around the head, which is considered one of the most heat-sensitive parts of the body.
Technical specifications released by logistics units stated that the helmets can reduce temperatures around the user’s head by nearly 8 to 12 degrees Celsius compared to the surrounding outdoor conditions.
Apart from the helmets, officers have also been provided with portable battery-operated ventilators, collar fans, chilled drinking water and Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to minimise dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
Authorities have additionally installed temporary tin sheds at several traffic intersections to provide shade and protect officers from dust storms and electrical hazards during changing weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of continued heatwave conditions, gusty winds and dust storms across the region during the week.
The heatwave has intensified concerns over the health and safety of outdoor workers, including traffic personnel, sanitation staff and delivery workers, as northern India experiences one of the hottest spells of the summer season.
