Delhi building collapse: 6 dead, 11 rescued from Satya Niketan debris

The death toll in the collapse of a 50-year-old multi-storey building in southwest Delhi's Satya Niketan rose to six on Monday, while 11 people have been rescued from the debris, an official said.

The building, which housed a boys' paying guest accommodation near Delhi University's South Campus, collapsed at around 1.30 pm on Sunday while repair work was in progress.

Rescue operations continued through the night, with teams from the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force and Delhi Disaster Management Authority involved in the efforts.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said one more person was rescued during the night but was brought dead, taking the death toll to six.

He said rescue teams were continuing efforts to locate other people who may be connected with the incident.

Police have registered a case against the building owner and others in connection with the collapse.

A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered into the incident.  (with inputs from PTI)
