Delhi records hottest May day in 2 years

Delhi experienced its hottest day of the season and the highest May temperature in two years, with the Safdarjung weather station recording a maximum of 43.4°C on May 19, 2026. Several parts of the city came close to 44°C as intense heat conditions gripped the capital.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heatwave is expected to persist through the week, with temperatures in parts of Delhi-NCR likely to touch 45°C. The Ridge station recorded 44.6°C, making it the hottest location in the capital, while Lodhi Road registered 43.8°C.
Officials attributed the severe conditions to dry northwesterly winds originating from the Thar Desert, which are intensifying heat across northern plains. The prolonged heatwave has also pushed Delhi’s peak power demand to 7,542 MW, the highest so far this summer.
Neighbouring regions are also witnessing extreme temperatures, with parts of Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh recording between 42°C and 47°C. The IMD has warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue in several districts until May 24.
Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary travel as the region continues to face intense heat stress with no immediate relief in sight.
