Delhi plans permanent drainage project to end chronic waterlogging in Dera Mandi

The Delhi Government on Friday announced a permanent drainage project to address the recurring waterlogging at Dera Mandi Road near Mandi village in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur area, following an inspection by PWD and Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh.
The Minister visited the affected stretch after heavy rainfall led to severe water accumulation, disrupting traffic and inconveniencing residents. Senior officials from the concerned departments accompanied him during the inspection to review the condition of the road, drainage network and sewer system.
According to the government, the affected road falls under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). As an immediate measure, PTO pumps have been deployed to continuously drain the accumulated water while authorities work on a long-term solution.
Officials informed the Minister that the stretch is a natural low-lying area where rainwater collects during heavy showers. Earlier, the excess water would flow through a natural drainage channel into Haryana.
However, with the outlet no longer available due to urban development, rainwater now remains trapped, leading to frequent waterlogging during the monsoon. To address the issue permanently, the Public Works Department (PWD) will construct a new precast reinforced cement concrete (RCC) drain from Dera Mandi Road to Dera Bhati Road, extending to Bandh Road.
