Delhi pays tribute to ex-CM Sahib Singh Verma on his birth anniversary

Hundreds of people from across the national capital gathered on Sunday to pay tribute to former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma on his 83rd birth anniversary. The public remembered him as a leader who remained deeply connected with ordinary citizens and worked extensively for the development of the city’s rural areas.
The tribute programme was held at Swabhiman Sthal Ghevra Mor, where residents from villages and neighbourhoods across Delhi assembled to offer prayers and floral tributes to the late leader. The gathering included residents, social workers, community representatives and supporters who participated in a prayer meeting and a hawan organised in his memory.
Delhi cabinet minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, son of the former chief minister, attended the ceremony along with other family members. He participated in the hawan and later offered floral tributes to a portrait of his father. Many citizens present at the gathering also paid their respects and remembered Verma’s contributions to Delhi’s development during his tenure in public life.
Speaking to reporters on the occasion, Parvesh Sahib Singh said the large turnout reflected the deep connection that Sahib Singh Verma shared with the people of Delhi. He said the former chief minister always believed that politics should focus on improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
“Even today, people from villages and different parts of Delhi come here to remember him. That connection with the people was his greatest strength,” the minister said.
Sahib Singh Verma served as the chief minister of Delhi in the late 1990s and was widely known for his focus on rural development and welfare initiatives for villages and unauthorised colonies in the capital. Parvesh Sahib Singh said his father had initiated several development programmes during his tenure and had envisioned large-scale infrastructure and social development in the Capital’s rural areas.
He added that many of those initiatives could not continue after the government changed. “When he was the chief minister, he started many initiatives for Delhi’s development and had several dreams for the future of the city. Unfortunately, after our government went out of power, many of those works could not continue,” he said.
