Delhi DDA removes over 57,000 MT silt in mission mode ahead of monsoon

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has removed over 57,000 metric tonnes (MT) of silt from stormwater drains as part of a mission-mode desilting drive aimed at strengthening the city’s drainage system ahead of the monsoon season. The exercise marks a 70 per cent increase compared to the previous year’s desilting work.
The DDA said the large-scale operation was undertaken to improve the carrying capacity of drains, ensure smoother rainwater flow and reduce the risk of waterlogging during heavy rainfall. The desilting work has been carried out across multiple zones, including East, South, North, Narela, Rohini and Dwarka.
According to officials, around 33,380 MT of silt was removed during last year’s pre-monsoon drive, while the current exercise has crossed 57,000 MT, reflecting a significant improvement in planning and execution.
The authority has also set up flood control rooms and deployed mobile pumping units at vulnerable locations to respond quickly to waterlogging complaints during heavy rains. Officials said regular monitoring and coordination with other agencies are being maintained to improve monsoon preparedness.
The desilting drive includes removal of accumulated silt, debris, vegetation and other blockages that obstruct the natural flow of rainwater. The initiative is expected to minimise flooding risks, improve drainage efficiency and reduce disruption to traffic movement during the rainy season.
