Delhi Assembly hosted grand Holi Milan

The Delhi Legislative Assembly hosted a grand Holi Milan on Tuesday, bringing together diplomats from more than 31 countries, senior political leaders, and public representatives in a rare display of cultural diplomacy and democratic fellowship. The celebration, held at the historic Assembly complex, saw participation from ambassadors, high commissioners, and members of the diplomatic corps. Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra was also present at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Vijender Gupta said Holi is not just a festival of colours but a celebration of India’s civilisational strength and democratic spirit. “Delhi, as the Capital of the world’s largest democracy, welcomes the world not only through diplomacy but through culture and shared celebration,” he said.
The event was attended by Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, former MP Ramesh Bidhuri, and several Members of the Legislative Assembly, including Arvinder Singh Lovely, Kailash Gahlot, Sanjay Goel, Anil Goel, Ravinder Singh Negi, and Surya Prakash Khatri.
Among the prominent diplomats present were Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner Pradeepa Mahishini Colonne, China’s Ambassador Xu Feihong, Nepal’s Ambassador Dr Shankar Prasad Sharma, Mauritius High Commissioner Sheilabai Bappoo GOSK, and South Africa’s High Commissioner Prof Anil Sooklal. Representatives from countries including Russia, Chile, Sudan, Venezuela, Bangladesh, and Vietnam also attended.
The Speaker reflected on the legend of Prahlad and Holika, saying that truth and moral courage ultimately triumph. He also referred to the traditions of Radha and Krishna, calling Holi a symbol of harmony beyond barriers of language and geography.
A documentary on Veer Vithal Bhai Patel, the first Indian Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly, was screened during the programme. The film highlighted his role in strengthening parliamentary traditions during the freedom movement.
The cultural segment featured a 90-minute showcase of Indian art forms. A Kathak recital and a traditional puppet performance were presented. An impressive Mallakhamb display from Madhya Pradesh, along with folk dances from various states, added to the festive atmosphere.
The speaker urged citizens to celebrate Holi responsibly. He appealed for the use of herbal gulal, avoidance of chemical colours, and judicious use of water. He stressed the need for environmental awareness and civic responsibility. The Holi Milan concluded with an exchange of greetings among dignitaries and diplomats, reinforcing India’s message of unity and culture on the global stage.
