DDA launches Jal Sanchay Abhiyan

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on Saturday launched the Jal Sanchay Abhiyan, a campaign to revive ponds, lakes, and reservoirs damaged by years of encroachment, siltation, and neglect.
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu inaugurated the initiative at District Park, West Vihar, by commencing desilting work on the 1.47-hectare lake there and said the Authority will restore 101 water bodies across the capital by the end of August.
The launch aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of environmental sustainability and water security for India. Local MLA Karnail Singh and DDA Vice-Chairman Shravan Kumar was also present. Sandhu emphasised the urgency of the project, recalling global recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s environmental initiatives and noting praise from leaders such as Barack Obama. “Water is the very lifeblood of the environment,” Sandhu added.
“The work we are beginning today through the Jal Sanchay Abhiyan should have started eight to 10 years ago. Better late than never, but it has finally begun.” He stressed that water conservation is not solely the government’s responsibility. “The duty lies with every citizen,” he said.
Highlighting Delhi’s twin challenges of water scarcity and air pollution, the Lt Governor called for collective action. “All agencies have been placed on high alert for the upcoming monsoon. There should be zero tolerance for waterlogging because the entire world is watching how Delhi manages its environment,” he asserted. DDA Vice-Chairman Shravan Kumar outlined the campaign’s immediate priorities.
“In the 101 water bodies taken up for revival today, the first focus will be rapid desilting and deepening so that catchment areas are ready before the monsoon arrives and we can capture every drop of rainwater,” he explained.
