Cultural performances celebrate shared heritage at Europe Day reception

As part of the Europe Day reception held on May 8, guests witnessed two specially curated cultural performances that highlighted the deep historical and artistic connections between India and Europe. Built around the theme “EUnitedINDiversity,” the evening brought together classical traditions, folk expressions, and contemporary storytelling to celebrate unity through cultural exchange.
One of the highlights of the evening was a specially conceptualised dance production tracing the centuries-long cultural exchanges between India and Europe. The performance explored how the relationship between the two regions extends far beyond modern diplomacy, rooted instead in centuries of trade, travel, artistic encounters, and storytelling.
Union Finance Minister Dr. Nirmala Sitharaman attended the event and represented India at the Europe Day.
Drawing inspiration from historical journeys undertaken by European travellers to India and Indian merchants and emissaries to Europe, the performance portrayed the movement of ideas, aesthetics, and traditions across borders. Through a blend of Indian and European dance forms, the production reflected how these interactions shaped enduring cultural connections.
The performance featured a vibrant mix of Indian classical and folk traditions including Perini, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Sattriya, and folk dance forms alongside European styles such as Ballet, Flamenco, and Tarantella. The presentation culminated in a collective rhythmic convergence where all dance forms moved together in synchrony, symbolising the evolution from historical encounters to contemporary partnership and celebrating the spirit of unity in diversity.
The production was conceptualised, curated, and coordinated by Vijayawada-based organisation Jignasa Artverse, which also brought together dancers from both India and Europe for the collaborative performance.
Adding a visually immersive element to the evening, puppet theatre and design collective Puppetshala Performing Arts presented a surprise experiential puppet performance designed around the theme “EUnitedINDiversity.”
The performance featured four self-lit giant puppets - two flamingos and two deer - each animated by performers who brought the creations to life through graceful movement and choreography. Set against soulful fusion music, the act explored the elegance, rhythm, and fluidity of nature in motion while blending Indian artistic traditions with Western imaginative storytelling.
The striking visual spectacle invited audiences to reconnect briefly with the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Through movement, scale, light, and music, the performance celebrated diversity, imagination, and coexistence.
Founded by puppeteer and artist Mohd. Shameem, Puppetshala brings together puppeteers, puppet makers, and multidisciplinary artists to create outdoor spectacles and performances that reimagine puppetry as a playful, thought-provoking, and contemporary art form.
