CRPF tightens security protocols in Manipur, deploys two CoBRA Battalions amid fresh tensions

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has strengthened its operational protocols in Manipur by making armoured vehicles mandatory for troop movement and deploying two battalions of its elite Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) as security concerns continue to rise in the state. The measures come amid renewed tensions involving Naga and Kuki groups and a series of attacks on security personnel in recent weeks.

According to officials, the revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) require personnel to use bulletproof vehicles even for routine administrative tasks such as transporting supplies. Around 100 armoured vehicles are expected to be deployed in phases to improve troop safety and reduce the risk of ambushes.

The updated SOPs were reportedly developed after studying previous attacks on security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri-Poonch region.

The newly deployed CoBRA commandos, who specialise in jungle warfare and counter-insurgency operations, will support the CRPF and Manipur Police in search operations, bunker demolition and securing vulnerable areas. The enhanced deployment reflects the Centre's efforts to reinforce security as ethnic and insurgent-related tensions continue to challenge law and order in Manipur.
