Cousin held in Govindpuri double murder case

Delhi Police arrested a 28-year-old man in Tughlakabad Extension late on the night of May 22-23, following an exchange of fire. He is accused of murdering his cousin and her 13-year-old son in Govindpuri, Southeast Delhi, on May 20, according to police officials.
The accused, identified as Saurabh Sahu of Sangam Vihar, allegedly fired at a police team near Ghati Wala Park in Tughlakabad Extension during the operation conducted on the night of May 22-23. Police reported that Sub-Inspector Yashpal narrowly escaped injury when a bullet struck his bulletproof jacket.
Sharda Sahu and her teenage son, Khushal, were found brutally murdered inside their residence late at night on 20 May.
The investigation began after the murders were discovered on May 20 and was carried out under the supervision of senior district officers, with separate teams analysing CCTV footage, conducting technical surveillance, scrutinising call detail records (CDRs), and interrogating suspects and local contacts. Police said the first breakthrough came through local intelligence from Govindpuri staff, later corroborated by electronic surveillance. When police intercepted Saurabh on the night of May 22-23 and asked him to surrender, he allegedly opened indiscriminate fire using an illegal country-made pistol. Police retaliated in self-defence and overpowered him after a brief encounter. They took the injured accused to the hospital, where he remains under police custody.
During interrogation, Saurabh allegedly confessed to killing his cousin and her son due to personal resentment and jealousy. Police said the deceased woman often counselled him against his drug addiction and criminal activities, which allegedly triggered animosity.
Police recovered the country-made pistol used in the crime, fired and live cartridges, blood-stained clothes, and other incriminating evidence. Officials said Saurabh has a criminal history and has committed at least four previous crimes.
