The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has temporarily suspended all consular and visa services due to unavoidable circumstances, according to an official announcement issued on Tuesday. In a brief notice, the High Commission said the suspension will remain in effect until further notice. “Any inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted,” the statement said.The announcement did not specify the reasons for the suspension nor provide a timeline for the resumption of services.
Applicants who were planning to submit visa or consular applications have been advised to await further updates from official channels.The temporary halt is expected to impact travellers, students, businesspersons, and others requiring consular assistance. Authorities indicated that further information would be shared once services are ready to resume.
The development comes days after India temporarily shut its visa application centre in Chittagong until further notice, following protests by demonstrators outside the Assistant High Commission of India in the port city, Bangladesh’s second-largest.Although New Delhi-Dhaka relations have remained strained since the August 2024 ouster of Bangladesh’s then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a student-led movement, the latest tensions were reportedly triggered by the fatal shooting of youth politician Sharif Osman Hadi. Sections of Bangladesh’s political leadership have since blamed India for the incident, further escalating diplomatic unease.
