CBSE to refund Re-evaluation fee if marks increase in class 12 exams

The Central Board of Secondary Education has announced a major relief for Class 12 students by introducing a full refund policy for re-evaluation fees if a student’s marks increase after the review process.
The decision comes amid concerns raised by students and parents over the newly reintroduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) evaluation system, with many claiming they received lower-than-expected scores in the CBSE Class 12 board examinations.
In an official statement shared on social media, CBSE said students whose marks are revised upward after re-evaluation will receive a complete refund of the fees paid for the process. The board said the move is aimed at strengthening transparency, fairness and accountability in the evaluation system.
Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education, also confirmed the decision during a press conference.
He stated that students will be charged Rs 100 to obtain scanned copies of their answer sheets, another Rs 100 for verification of marks, and Rs 25 per question for rechecking specific answers.
CBSE said the revised re-evaluation mechanism allows students to first access scanned copies of their answer books before applying for verification or reassessment. According to the board, this system is designed to ensure greater transparency and help students make informed decisions.
The board added that subject experts will review all requests for verification and re-evaluation to ensure accuracy and fairness in the marking process.
CBSE also announced that online applications for obtaining scanned copies of answer sheets will open from May 19 to May 22, 2026. Applications for verification and re-evaluation can be submitted between May 26 and May 29, 2026.
