CBSE Makes Three-Language Study Mandatory for Classes 9 and 10 From July 1

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students of Classes 9 and 10 will now be required to study three languages starting from July 1, 2026. The move has been introduced in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
Under the new guidelines, students must study three languages, with at least two of them being native Indian languages. The initiative aims to encourage multilingual learning and strengthen students’ understanding of regional and national languages.
CBSE has also clarified that there will be no separate board examination for the third language in Class 10. Instead, assessment of the third language will be conducted internally by schools. The performance of students in this subject will be included in their CBSE certificates.
The Board has assured students and parents that no student will be prevented from appearing for the Class 10 Board examinations because of the third language requirement. The decision is expected to support broader language learning while reducing pressure associated with additional board examinations.
