BNP thanks PM Modi for condolence message on Khaleda Zia’s demise

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed its appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his condolence message following the death of former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia, underscoring her enduring role in shaping India-Bangladesh relations even as Dhaka prepares for a crucial political transition.
Khaleda Zia, a three-time prime minister and the founding figure of the BNP, passed away on December 30 after a prolonged illness. Her death prompted tributes from leaders across South Asia, reflecting her long-standing influence on regional politics. In a personal letter addressed to her son and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, Prime Minister Modi described Zia as a leader of "rare resolve and conviction" whose vision and legacy would continue to guide relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The letter was handed over by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who represented India at Zia's funeral in Dhaka. Jaishankar also met Tarique Rahman on the sidelines of the funeral, conveying condolences on behalf of the Indian government and people. The interaction was viewed as a significant diplomatic gesture at a time when bilateral ties have faced strains over regional developments and concerns related to minority communities.
In his message, Modi recalled meeting Khaleda Zia during his visit to Dhaka in June 2015 and acknowledged her contributions not only to Bangladesh's development but also to strengthening ties with India. He noted that while her passing had created an "irreplaceable void," her ideals and leadership would endure. Expressing confidence in Tarique Rahman's political role, Modi said Zia's values would be carried forward under his leadership of the BNP and would help foster a "new beginning" in India-Bangladesh relations.
The BNP welcomed Modi's message and Jaishankar's presence at the funeral, sharing its appreciation publicly and highlighting Zia's efforts to maintain constructive engagement with India during her tenure. Party leaders said the gesture reflected mutual respect between the two countries, despite political differences.
Jaishankar later said he had conveyed India's "deepest condolences" and expressed confidence that Zia's vision would continue to guide the bilateral partnership. His visit also included brief interactions with other regional dignitaries, underscoring the wider regional attention surrounding Zia's funeral.
With Bangladesh heading toward elections and Tarique Rahman emerging as a key political contender, the exchanges have been seen as an indication of India's intent to maintain dialogue and engagement across political lines, while reaffirming the importance of stability and cooperation in the region.
