BJP booth-level worker allegedly shot dead in West Bengal's Birbhum

A 46-year-old booth-level BJP worker was allegedly shot dead in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Sunday evening, police said.

The deceased was identified as Chandan Bhalla, who was found dead in the Trishulapatty locality, police said.

Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bhundesh said preliminary findings suggested that the man appeared to have been shot dead. 

"The exact cause of the death can be ascertained after the post-mortem is completed," Bhundesh said.

Police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the incident.

According to Bhalla's family members, he received a call from an unidentified person before leaving his house.

Shyamapada Mondal, president of the BJP's Bolpur organisational district, described Bhalla as a long-time and active party worker.

"It is very unfortunate that our party worker has been shot dead. We want the police administration to act within 24 hours," Mondal said.

Further investigation is underway, police said.  (with inputs from PTI)
