BJP Government in West Bengal Likely to Take Oath on May 9 Coinciding with Rabindra Jayanti

The Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to hold the swearing-in ceremony for its new government in West Bengal on May 9, aligning the event with Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
Sources involved in the government formation process indicated that the date is being considered to symbolise a new beginning in the state following the party’s landmark electoral victory.
State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya confirmed the development, stating that the oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Minister is expected to take place on May 9.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier hinted at this timeline during his campaign in Barrackpore, expressing confidence about returning to the state for the swearing-in ceremony after the election results.
Following the results, Modi invoked Tagore’s ideals while addressing party workers in New Delhi, referencing the vision of a society “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.”
As per the constitutional process, officials from the Election Commission are expected to submit the formal notification of results to the Chief Electoral Officer in Kolkata. The Governor will then invite the outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resign and may ask her to continue as caretaker until the new government is sworn in.
The proposed date, which coincides with Pochishe Boishakh, holds deep cultural significance in Bengal, where Tagore’s legacy continues to shape literature, music, and public life.
With the BJP set to form its first government in the state after decades of dominance by the Left and the Trinamool Congress, the swearing-in ceremony is expected to mark a historic political transition.
