BGB seizes smuggled Indian sarees worth taka 1.7 crore in Cumilla

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized a large consignment of smuggled Indian sarees valued at over Taka 1.7 crore during an operation in the Shashidal border area under Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla.
According to BGB sources, it was made following specific intelligence. A patrol team from Shashidal Border Outpost (BOP), operating under Sultanpur Battalion (60 BGB), carried out an anti-smuggling drive in the area and recovered a substantial quantity of high-quality sarees that had been illegally brought into the country.
The estimated market value of the seized goods is Taka 1,70,17,000.
In a separate development, BGB also reported the seizure of smuggled goods worth approximately Taka 1.9 crore along the Sylhet border, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb illegal cross-border trade.
Legal procedures are currently underway to hand over the confiscated sarees to the appropriate customs authorities.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Shariful Islam, commanding officer of Sultanpur Battalion (60 BGB), stated that the force remains vigilant in maintaining border security and preventing smuggling, in line with directives from BGB headquarters. He added that intelligence surveillance and operational activities have been further intensified across border regions.
He also emphasised that such anti-smuggling drives will continue in the future as part of broader efforts to strengthen border controls and combat illicit trade.
