Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta dies after falling from terrace in Kolkata

Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta died today after allegedly falling from the terrace of his multi-storey residence in south Kolkata, police said.
According to officials, Dutta was rushed to a private hospital near Dhakuria following the incident, where doctors declared him dead.
Police teams reached the residence soon after the incident and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall. Authorities said the filmmaker’s family has not yet issued any official statement.
Several members of the Bengali film industry, including actors and directors, gathered at the hospital after news of his death emerged.
Anik Dutta gained widespread recognition with his 2012 film Bhooter Bhabishyat, a critically acclaimed horror satire known for its political and social commentary. The film is widely regarded as a landmark work in contemporary Bengali cinema.
He later directed films such as Ascharya Pradip, Aparajito, Meghnadbodh Rohoshyo and Borunbabur Bondhu, many of which received praise for blending social themes with engaging storytelling.
Dutta’s film Aparajito, inspired by the making of Satyajit Ray’s classic Pather Panchali, had earned significant appreciation from audiences and critics alike.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves across the Bengali film fraternity, with many colleagues and admirers expressing grief over the loss of one of Bengal’s noted contemporary filmmakers.
