Bengal: Major Anti-Encroachment Drive Conducted Near Howrah Railway Station

Authorities carried out a large-scale anti-encroachment drive outside Howrah Railway Station in West Bengal during the early hours of Sunday. The operation targeted illegal structures and makeshift shops occupying public spaces around the station area.
The drive was jointly conducted by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP), railway officials, and Howrah City Police. Heavy security arrangements were made to ensure law and order during the operation.
Bulldozers and earthmovers were used to remove temporary stalls and structures located near the Ganga ghat, bus stand, and station premises. Officials stated that the action was aimed at clearing railway land and improving convenience and movement for passengers around one of the country's busiest railway stations.
The encroachments had reportedly caused traffic congestion and difficulties for commuters for several years. However, many hawkers affected by the drive claimed they were not given enough notice before the demolition. Several vendors also demanded rehabilitation support, saying that their stalls had existed for decades and were their only source of income.
Police remained deployed in the area after the operation to maintain order and prevent any further disturbances.
