Baruipur Rape-Murder Case: 2 Arrested, 3 detained; prohibitory orders imposed in South 24 Parganas

West Bengal Police have arrested 2 people and detained 3 others in connection with the alleged gangrape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district. The victim's body was recovered stuffed inside a sack in the Surjyapur Haat area, sparking widespread outrage and protests.
A senior police officer said one accused was arrested on Sunday night, while another was taken into custody on Monday morning. Three more persons have been detained and are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. Police have also constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
The gruesome incident triggered massive protests in the area, with angry residents blocking the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burning tyres and damaging police vehicles while demanding swift action against those responsible for the crime.
Amid the unrest, a man was allegedly beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of being involved in the girl's murder. Police have launched a separate investigation into the mob lynching.
To prevent further violence, authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the Baruipur, Narendrapur and Sonarpur areas. Officials said the measure was taken as a precautionary step to maintain law and order.
Police said the situation is currently under control, with heavy deployment of security personnel in the affected areas. Authorities have appealed to the public not to spread or believe rumours and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt peace.
The investigation into the alleged rape and murder is continuing, with forensic evidence and witness statements being examined to establish the sequence of events and identify all those involved.
