Bangladesh family murder: accused stayed back, bathed and ate before fleeing
New details have emerged in the killing of a family of four in Bangladesh's Rangpur city, with reports saying the accused stayed inside the house after the murders, took a bath and ate food before fleeing.
A retired Hindu school teacher, Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, were found dead in their locked house in the Daspara area on Friday night, according to the Daily Star newspaper.
Police have detained two men, Mughdho and Siddhartha, who are cousins, for their involvement in the killings.
According to Bangladesh's Prothom Alo, the two accused remained inside the house after the killings and left during Jummah prayers on Friday. Before fleeing, they opened cupboards and scattered belongings on the floor to give it a robbery angle, the report said.
Investigators found that the accused took the drug yaba before fleeing, local media reported. The victim's mobile phone was allegedly submerged in water mixed with detergent to destroy evidence. Police also recovered gold jewellery robbed from the house.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said in a media briefing on Sunday that the duo allegedly entered the rooftop of the Chakraborty house through a neighbouring building and took yaba there on Thursday night. Ganapati Chakraborty went to the rooftop after hearing noises and questioned the two men. To avoid being exposed, the suspects strangled him with a gamchha, a thin cotton towel, police said. When his wife went upstairs hearing the noise, the suspects allegedly strangled her with a piece of cloth on the staircase. The couple's daughter and son were also killed.
Police said the family had no known disputes or enmity with anyone. An investigation is under way.
