Assembly constitutes committee to select recipient of Annual Best Legislator Award

The Delhi Legislative Assembly has constituted a high-level committee to select the recipient of the Annual Best Legislator Award, an initiative aimed at encouraging better legislative performance and strengthening democratic values in the House. The committee was formed by Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta. Officials said the award will recognise Members of the Legislative Assembly who demonstrate outstanding commitment to public service and active participation in parliamentary proceedings.

According to a press release issued by the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the functioning of the legislature and promote higher standards of debate and accountability. The award is also expected to encourage MLAs to participate more actively in discussions and raise public issues effectively.

The newly constituted selection committee will oversee the evaluation process and recommend the award recipient. The committee is chaired by Speaker Vijender Gupta and includes several prominent members from legislative and public life. Members of the panel include former Lok Sabha MP Rajendra Aggarwal, former Lok Sabha Secretary General P. D. T. Acharya, Principal Secretary of Law, Justice and Legislative Affairs Reetesh Singh, a senior journalist, and Delhi Assembly Secretary Ranjeet Singh.

Officials said the diverse composition of the panel is intended to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process. The committee has also established a detailed framework for evaluating the performance of legislators. MLAs will be assessed on several criteria, including their attendance in the House, the quality and relevance of their participation in debates, and the public issues they raise during proceedings.

Another important factor in the evaluation will be adherence to parliamentary decorum and discipline while participating in discussions. Officials said the aim is to recognise those legislators who contribute constructively and help strengthen democratic debate.

Speaker Vijender Gupta said the award is meant to highlight the importance of responsible legislative conduct. “The Best Legislator Award is not merely a trophy. It represents the sanctity of the House,” he said.
