Assam floods: 1.36 lakh people affected as death toll rises to 85

The flood situation in Assam improved on Sunday, but more than 1.36 lakh people remained affected across five districts as three more deaths took the toll in this year's floods to 85, according to an official bulletin.

All three fresh deaths were reported from Sivasagar district, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

The number of people affected by the floods fell from nearly 1.8 lakh on Saturday, August 1 to over 1.36 lakh on Sunday, August 2 across Charaideo, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat and Sivasagar districts.

Sivasagar remained the worst-affected district, with more than 55,000 people affected, followed by Charaideo with around 40,000 and Jorhat with nearly 22,000.

According to ASDMA, 335 villages are still inundated and 15,422 hectares of farmland have been damaged.

The administration is currently operating 54 relief camps and relief distribution centres across the five affected districts, providing assistance to 13,771 people.

The Dhansiri river continued to flow above the danger mark at Numaligarh, PTI reported.
