Assam CM Himanta reviews NEET-UG 2026 re-exam preparedness, stresses fair conduct

With the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday reviewed the preparedness of districts where the examination will be conducted and directed officials to ensure robust security measures for its free, fair and transparent conduct.
The review meeting was held through video conference and attended by District Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and other senior district officials.
According to officials, a total of 43,319 candidates have registered for the re-examination across Assam. The test will be conducted at 87 examination centres spread across 17 districts of the state.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed District Commissioners and SSPs to jointly inspect all examination centres to assess security arrangements, infrastructure readiness and logistical preparations. He also directed authorities to conduct mandatory technical audits and dry runs of CCTV cameras, biometric devices and signal jammers well before the examination date.
To strengthen security around examination venues, Dr Sarma ordered the enforcement of prohibitory measures within a 100-metre radius of all centres. He stressed the need for adequate public awareness campaigns to inform people about the restrictions and ensure that only candidates are allowed near the examination premises. The Chief Minister also directed the deployment of sufficient women police personnel at all centres.
Highlighting the importance of maintaining examination integrity, Dr Sarma called for strict adherence to National Testing Agency (NTA) guidelines on candidate frisking. He instructed officials to carry out double-layer frisking in a professional and courteous manner while maintaining maximum vigilance against any attempt at malpractice.
The Chief Minister further directed that a nodal officer be appointed in every district for CCTV monitoring and that random checks of CCTV footage be conducted regularly. Regarding the security of question papers, he ordered strict regulation of access to bank lockers where question papers are stored. Visits by private individuals, he said, should be permitted only under exceptional circumstances and with prior approval from the District Magistrate. Additionally, a senior police officer not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) will be designated in each district to oversee the security and monitoring of the lockers.
Officials informed the meeting that a dedicated control room will be established at the office of the Director of Medical Education and will become operational from June 19. To facilitate candidates’ travel on the examination day, free transportation on Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses will be provided upon presentation of valid admit cards.
