30-year-old teacher dies after scooter hit by water tanker

A 30-year-old Government school teacher was killed on Friday afternoon after a water tanker ran over her scooter on a busy stretch of road in northwest Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar area.
The fatal accident took place around 2.22 pm near Shah Alam Bandh on the 51-foot road, a key arterial route that witnesses heavy traffic during peak hours. Police said the tanker struck the scooter with considerable force, leaving the woman critically injured. She died on the spot before any medical help could reach her.
The deceased has been identified as Naaz, a resident of Jahangirpuri. She was working as an English teacher at a government girls’ secondary school in Burari. Police said she was commuting on her scooter when the accident occurred. According to officials, a PCR call was received at Adarsh Nagar police station following the crash. A police team rushed to the scene and found a water tanker and a badly damaged scooter lying on the road. “On reaching the spot, the team found that a water tanker had hit a scooter, leading to fatal injuries to the rider,” a senior police officer said.
Eyewitnesses told police that the tanker ran over the scooter after hitting it, causing Naaz to fall on the road. She sustained severe injuries and died instantly. The impact of the collision was such that bystanders rushed to the scene, drawing a large crowd within minutes.
The tanker driver, identified as Jagdev Singh, aged 59, was caught by the public soon after the incident. He was later handed over to the police. The water tanker involved in the accident has been seized for further examination. “Preliminary inquiry indicated that the tanker hit the scooter with significant force, causing the rider to fall on the road and sustain fatal injuries,” the officer said. “The exact sequence of events leading to the accident is being examined as part of the investigation.”
The accident led to chaos on the busy road, with several commuters forced to stop. Family members of the deceased also rushed to the spot after receiving information, adding to the emotional and traffic turmoil. Police said temporary traffic congestion was reported on the stretch due to the crowd and damaged vehicles.
Additional police personnel were deployed to manage the situation and regulate traffic. “Extra staff was sent to the spot to ensure law and order and to clear the road,” the officer said. Traffic movement was gradually restored after the tanker and scooter were removed.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and launched a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine responsibility. Investigators are also checking whether the tanker was being driven rashly or negligently at the time of the accident. “We are verifying if the vehicle was being driven recklessly. Teams have been formed to investigate the entire matter properly,” the officer said.
The body of the deceased was sent for post-mortem examination, and her family has been informed. The incident has renewed concerns over road safety, especially involving heavy vehicles operating on narrow and crowded roads during daytime hours. Police said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
