20 illegal commercial structures on Govt land demolished in Gurugram
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) on Thursday, July 30, demolished around 20 illegal commercial establishments operating on government land in Sector 42 along the Golf Course Road after the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran confirmed ownership of the land, officials said.
The district administration and police carried out the demolition drive under the supervision of district town planner and GMDA nodal officer R S Batth, they added.
The officials said the action followed completion of legal formalities, including the issuance of show-cause notices and restoration orders against the encroachments.
Before launching the drive, the GMDA sought fresh confirmation of land ownership from the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) to avoid legal disputes.
The authorities used excavators to raze around 20 permanent and semi-permanent structures, including vegetable shops, automobile repair workshops, flower shops, roadside eateries, a medical store, a hookah outlet, a chicken shop and other commercial units operating on public land, the officials said.
The action followed repeated complaints by residents, including the Global Foyer Condominium Association, alleging that government land near the Krishna Hotel, opposite the Global Foyer Mall, had been encroached upon for commercial use.
The residents also raised concerns over traffic congestion, pollution and safety due to the encroachments.
According to the officials, a survey had earlier identified multiple encroachments, following which notices were issued directing the occupants to vacate the land.
As the encroachments were not cleared despite the expiry of the notice period, the authorities proceeded with the demolition drive after completing the verification process.
"Illegal occupation of government land and unauthorised commercial activities will not be tolerated. The law will take its course, and strict action will continue against all encroachments in accordance with the rules,” GMDA nodal officer R S Batth stated.
