XITE Gamharia (Autonomous) has taken a progressive step in fostering inclusivity by hosting a Gender Sensitisation session titled "Understanding Third Gender". The event, organized with the support of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Cell, aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, promote understanding, and encourage a culture of respect for diversity.
The session was graced by an impressive lineup of speakers, including Shadvi Amarjeet Singh Sakhi (Founder & Secretary), Mahant Himanshi Padhan, Arpit Pandey (President, The Humsafar Trust, Mumbai), and other notable personalities like Mr. Nilofar and Mr. Anshu Goyal. Their diverse expertise in LGBTQ+ issues helped provide valuable insights into topics ranging from understanding gender binaries to the creation of inclusive, safe environments for all individuals.
In partnership with The Humsafar Trust, India’s first community-based organization dedicated to the health and human rights of LGBTQ+ communities, and Utthan CBO, which advocates for the rights of third-gender individuals, the session was designed to broaden attendees’ perspectives on gender inclusivity.
The session was attended by a range of prominent figures, including Dr. (Fr.) Mukti Clarence, S.J., Vice Principal, and faculty members such as Assist. Prof. Sushmita Chowdhury Sen, Assist. Prof. Dr. Swati Singh, Assist. Prof. Reetika Singh, Assist. Prof. Anjali Jha, and Assist. Prof. Nidhi Kumari. Ashish Singh, Head of Branding & Communication, was also present, further highlighting the commitment of the institution to a diverse, inclusive environment.
Topics discussed included the importance of breaking gender stereotypes, understanding the role of pronouns, and the significance of allyship. The session also addressed the legal advancements in LGBTQ+ rights in India, notably the landmark Navtej Singh Johar case and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which have played a crucial role in securing the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.
