Commemorating World Water Day on Saturday, the state capital witnessed a series of events aimed at raising awareness about water conservation and environmental sustainability. From Upper Lake to city parks and schools, students, officials, and volunteers engaged in activities highlighting the need to protect water bodies.
VIT Bhopal’s School of Architecture, in collaboration with the Antique Arcade Club and Van Vihar, organised an awareness walk at Upper Lake. Students from VIT Bhopal, MANIT, and RGPV participated alongside representatives from the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) and other organisations.
Sheetal Sharma, Dean and Professor at VIT Bhopal and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), educated students about the historical and geological significance of the man-made lake, built by Raja Bhoj. She displayed an old map and explained how reduced inflows and sediment accumulation are threatening its depth and water storage capacity. Students also interacted with BMC divers to understand how silt from Sehore and other catchment areas is affecting the lake.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Forest Division organised conservation events at Swarn Jayanti Park, Sanskriti Van, and Vallabh Bhavan Park. DFO Nidhi Chauhan led an awareness campaign highlighting the urgent need to conserve water. A tree plantation programme, attended by SDO Ramkrishna Choudhary, reinforced the importance of afforestation in water conservation.
