Days after members of a cycling expedition were accosted by a tiger in the Chiklod forests, an SUV veered and hit a tree as the driver lost control after sighting a tiger in the Chandanpura area of the state capital on Friday morning.
Authorities have barricaded the road, closing the route for both pedestrians and vehicular traffic, after the incident sent a scare through the area.
Two bovines have also perished due to tiger attacks in the area over the last 24 hours, confirmed Forest Range Officer Shivpal Piparde.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Lokpriya Bharti said, "Picketing and patrols are continuing in the area to trace the movement of the predator. Cameras will be installed to enhance monitoring in the area where the attacks on livestock have been reported."
Piparde said the bovines were killed in the vicinity of the 13 Shutter area of the Kaliyasot reservoir.
Notably, the stretch between the Kolar-Kaliyasot-Kerwa dams has long been known for the presence of tigers. Recent building activity in the area is believed to have disturbed the tranquillity preferred by the striped carnivores.
Large tracts of Chandanpura, where the tigers were spotted, were acquired as part of the Kaliyasot Dam project several decades ago, but the land was later restored to the original landowners.
Wildlife watchers say the area surrounding the three dams covers large stretches of forests and water bodies that form an age-old tiger corridor, which has witnessed significant development in recent years.
Municipal and forest authorities have put up warning signs in the area to inform residents and walkers of the presence of the big cats, who perhaps view the locale as their own turf.
The tiger sighting comes less than a week after a group of around 35 cyclists, passing through the vicinity of the Bhojpur Temple as part of an expedition through the Chiklod forests, sighted a tiger that emerged from the bushes.
The tiger lurked for a couple of minutes before stepping back into the shrubbery and merging into the landscape. No one was hurt in the incident, which has since gone viral on the internet.
Meanwhile, forest authorities have taken strong note of the cycling expedition, which they describe as a breach of forest and wildlife norms.
