Summer scoop: Ice cream sales pick up in Bhopal

Sunday, 23 March 2025 | Kishan Singh Rana | Bhopal

With summer heat intensifying, ice cream sales in the city are soaring. From 7 pm to 2 am, squares and crossroads come alive as people gather around vendors, seeking a refreshing escape from the sweltering weather.

For newlyweds and courting couples, ice cream adds a touch of romance. On VIP Road, under the glow of colourful lights, a newlywed couple stands near an ice cream shop. "We recently got married, and my husband promised me before marriage that we would come here for ice cream after dinner," the woman said, smiling.

The origins of ice cream remain debated—some trace it to Iran, others to China. Legend suggests the first ice cream was falooda, prepared in Iran’s sharp-edged caves. In India, historical references appear in the Ain-e-Akbari, which mentions Emperor Akbar’s fondness for the delicacy.

Madhya Pradesh’s first ice cream factory was established near Bhopal railway station under Sir Sobha Singh’s supervision, following the advice of Nawab Hamidullah. This factory mainly produced Dilkhush Ice Cream, which became a summer favourite.

When Dilkhush closed down several decades ago, it was replaced by another local brand, Top N' Town, which continues to hold sway over the ice cream market despite some competition from national brands like Vadilal and Naturals.

Recent years have seen young entrepreneurs enter the sorbet scene. Most of them source ice cream from other brands and then reinterpret it with value additions. Their outlets cater to a premium segment of the market.

During Ramadan, ice cream holds special significance. After breaking their fast at sunset and offering dusk prayers, many people head to ice cream parlours, making it part of their post-Iftar tradition.

On VIP Road, near Raja Bhoj memorial, a man selling ice cream from a handcart says, "Sales peak in summer. As soon as the evening cools after 7 pm, customers increase. Girls prefer chocolate cones, while boys opt for vanilla or matka kulfi."

At Aashima Mall, DB Mall, and Jyoti Talkies, mobile ice cream trucks selling falooda and rabri ice cream are a common sight. Rakesh Ahirwar, who has been running an ice cream cart outside Aashima Mall with his 17-year-old son for four years, said, "Most of our customers come after dining at restaurants or watching a movie in the mall."

Families cherish ice cream outings. Prince Narwaria, enjoying falooda with his family, said, "I’m home for the holidays, so I’m spending quality time with my wife and kids. Ice cream outings help me connect with my children’s likes and dislikes." His wife, Seema, added, "Whenever my husband is on leave, he takes the family out for ice cream himself."

At the Top N’ Town outlet near the swank Gulmohar and Trilanga colonies, children eagerly pick their favourite flavours. A shop employee noted, "Some people want a new flavour every day, so we offer several options."

Meanwhile, in Jumerati, vendor Vikas relies on a traditional technique. "I always sell ice cream where families shop. Knowing where to attract customers is key, and ringing a bell is a great way to boost sales," he said. As the city slows down after a scorching day and examination grades, sales targets and EMIs take a backseat, an evening treat of ice cream with friends, family, or a loved one is just the interlude a doctor would prescribe.
