Top leaders of the corporate world brainstormed about state-of-art modern HR practices in the first day of the 2 day HR conclave held at SAIL-MTI, Ranchi. The central theme of the conclave is “Role of HR in shaping Company Culture”. The galaxy of doyens of industry comprised K.K. Singh, Director (Personnel), SAIL; Uttam Lal, Director (Personnel), NHPC; V.K. Singh Ex-Director (Personnel), Powergrid & CEO, PSSC; Vijay Sinha, Head of HR(JSW); Biswadeep Lahiri, Partner Deloitte; Varun Kejriwal, MD & Partner, BCG; Anup Kumar, ED(Safety), SAIL; B.S. Popli, ED(HR), SAIL; Pawan Kumar, ED(HR), BSP; Sandip Kumar Kar, ED(RDCIS) & Sushmita Roy, ED(HR), DSP.
Inaugurating the conclave in his opening remarks K.K. Singh exhorted the gathering to emulate the Sports Culture into the very fabric of shop floor operations of steel plants for instilling a high performance culture. Driving the analogy of a soccer team as a metaphor Dr. Singh opined that in the team everyone knows where the goal exists; each one is aware what is to be done at every moment; they celebrate together in victories and learn together in the rainy days. During the off season they dedicate themselves to net practice for continual improvement. He asserted that only through best HR practices, in the coming years SAIL can produce 35 Million Tonnes of steel with a reduction of more than 50% in employee strength to a mere 25000, as well as retaining a market share of 11%. All this is contingent upon speedy implementation of High Performance Culture. All the above are to be achieved under internationally driven market forces, without any of the PSU advantages as that enjoyed in yesteryears. He commented that SAIL has already shown its mettle by closing down some of its old blast furnaces and ushering in new height in pellets & cold dust injections.
The Panel Discussion on the central theme of the conclave was the cynosure for the audience. Dr. Singh described the cultural symbiosis after the merger of IISCo in SAIL.
Lal compared his stints at NTPC & NHPC and opined the Horses for Courses approach depending upon the inner attributes of the companies. He stated that NHPC has one of the toughest working conditions in extreme inclement climates and needs a different strategy to motivate people. HR schemes like ‘HR aapke Dwar’ , Sambal, Bandhan etc have work wonders at NHPC where care for family & kids have reinforced employee belongingness.
VK Singh evinced that how smart HR practices at Powergrid helped it to acquire Maharatna Status in shortest possible time; how HR contributed in Powergrid becoming a global benchmark with highest length of transmission network coupled with highest Line availability. How HR implemented speedy decision making and contributed in achieving record per capita productivity and profit.
The program started with the National Anthem & Lighting of the Lamp. Sanjay Dhar, Acting ED(L&D-HR), MTI welcomed all the dignitaries with flower bouquets. Master of the Ceremony Amrita Tripathy conducted the proceedings elegantly.
