Rs 9,000 crore for clean water and sanitation

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said her government has allocated a historic Rs 9,000 Crore for providing clean water and sanitation to Delhi’s three crore population.

The budget provides for building 40 Decentralised Sewage Treatment Plants at a cost of Rs 500 Crore for cleaning Yamuna  so that sewage water is treated at the source itself.

Moreover, GPS system will be installed in water tankers and the government will develop an Android mobile app “DJB Tanker” through which citizens will be able to monitor and track the tankers coming to their area.

The budget provides for Rs  10 Crore for consultancy services for water sector projects.  Rs 150 Crore will be invested in  automation, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System and Intelligent Metering to make water management more effective.

Rs 500 Crore for repair and development of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), Rs 250 Crore for replacement of old sewer lines, and Rs 250 Crore for improvement of Water Treatment Plants also figured in budgetary provisions. Also, Rs 20 Crore allocated to purchase Super sucker and dicky machines to improve the sewerage system.

Among others, Rs 10 Crore allocated for the renovation of Wazirabad trunk sewer and Rs 250 Crore to prevent and treat dirty drain water in Delhi.

Rs 50 Crore is proposed for the repair of CLC Drain, Rs 50 Crore for piped water supply in areas still deprived of water supply and Rs 200 Crore for the conversion and interception of Najafgarh Drain.

In order to prevent water loss and increase efficiency, pipelines will be laid in place of open canals from Haryana with an amount of Rs 200 Crore. 

Allocations also made to install new Borewells/Ranney Wells at a cost of Rs 100 crore and Rs 50 crore for the revival of Delhi’s water bodies.

Other provisions include Rs 50 crore for Rainwater Harvesting and Rs 150 crore for Emergency Water Storage. Rs 40 crore earmarked for purchase of modern machinery like trash skimmer, weed harvester and dredge utility.

Delhi government will also seek financial assistance of Rs 2,000 crore from the Government of India as more funds are  required to bring Delhi’s water and sewage infrastructure in line with international standards.
