The protest against a liquor shop near the Rishipuram Tri-Junction in Awadhpuri spread to Sai Ram Colony at Semra on Wednesday, as women and school students joined demonstrators who are reciting religious texts to push for the relocation of the contentious shop.
Residents argue that the current location of the liquor shop is close to a school, a religious site, and a residential area, causing inconvenience to locals.
Women and schoolchildren joined the protest. Holding placards, the children organised a rally in the area and staged a demonstration right in front of the shop.
Protesters say the liquor shop is located on the main road near Semra Gate in Sai Ram Colony, despite its official documents being registered under Chandbad. The shop's presence is causing distress to thousands of residents from Vijay Nagar, Sai Ram Colony, Babu Colony, Laxmipuri, and Semra.
Residents state they have already raised their demand to relocate the liquor shop at three public hearings. Recently, many women carried placards and approached officials, warning of an intensified movement if their demands were not met.
They stated that drunkards often misbehave, making it unsafe for women and children. Despite multiple complaints, only assurances have been given. As a result, residents have now begun reciting the Sundarkand and staging protests.
Residents of Rishipuram Tri-Junction in Awadhpuri have already completed a 24-hour, non-stop recitation of the Ramayan in protest against a liquor shop.
On Tuesday, they also met with Collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh and continued their sit-in protest late into the night.
They have set up a tent directly in front of the shop and are continuing their demonstration on Wednesday. Protesters have vowed not to leave until the shop is relocated.
Alcohol consumption is viewed as a sign of moral degradation, which residents say could lead to safety risks for women and children in their areas.
Protests against liquor shops were also witnessed at Malviya Nagar, where authorities are now believed to have intervened and proposed that the shop will not shift to its new premises.
Residents at Bawadia Kalan, Panchsheel Nagar, and Sant Hirdaram Nagar are also protesting against the opening of liquor shops in their localities.
