Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, several key decisions have been made to benefit sugarcane farmers, resulting in increased sugarcane production and a boost to the state’s economy. Among these initiatives is the revival of the long-closed Chhata Sugar Mill in Mathura and the establishment of a new ethanol distillery at Pipraich in Gorakhpur.
Both projects are currently undergoing the e-tendering process, and construction will begin next month once the process is completed.
The Chhata Sugar Mill, which has been closed since 2009, is set to have its crushing capacity increased from 2,000 TDS to 3,000 TDS, with potential expansion up to 4,900 TDS. This is a major boost for sugarcane farmers in the region.
Similarly, a 120 KPLD ethanol distillery will be established at Pipraich Sugar Mill in Gorakhpur, with Rs 90 crore allocated in the state budget. The project’s tender process is in its final stage and construction is expected to start next month.
The Yogi government has also prioritised timely payments to sugarcane farmers, disbursing a record Rs 2.80 lakh crore over the past eight years. In stark contrast, previous administrations paid only Rs 66.703 crore over 22 years between 1995 and 2017.
This year, Rs 475 crore has been approved in the state budget, with 88 per cent of the amount already disbursed and the remaining payments set to be completed soon. Chief Minister Yogi has called this initiative a historic achievement, emphasising the crucial role of sugarcane farmers in the state’s economy. Currently, sugarcane farming and related industries contribute Rs 1.09 lakh crore to the Gross Value Added (GVA) of Uttar Pradesh.
