Bhopal police have registered an FIR against a groom from Rajgarh after he called off his wedding at the last moment due to an unfulfilled dowry demand for a Thar SUV. The bride’s family filed a complaint on Saturday, following which legal action was taken.
According to reports, the wedding was scheduled to take place on Friday night at a garden in Lalghati, Bhopal. However, at around 8 PM, the groom, Rahul Chauhan, called the bride’s family and demanded a Thar SUV. When they expressed their inability to arrange the vehicle immediately, he refused to proceed with the marriage.
The bride’s family pleaded with him to reconsider, but he remained adamant. When they warned him of legal action, he allegedly claimed to be an active BJP leader and continued to insist on his demand. Reports suggest that he had also asked for five tolas of gold in addition to the SUV.
When Rahul refused to relent, the bride decided to call off the marriage herself. The girl’s family reached out to Rahul’s parents, including his father, Gopal Singh Chauhan, a police inspector (TI) posted in Rajgarh, but they too insisted on fulfilling their son’s demand. The baraat (wedding procession) did not arrive even by 11 PM, forcing the bride to cancel the wedding.
According to TI Brijendra Merscole, the bride, a 26-year-old woman, was set to get married in a grand ceremony on Friday night. The groom’s family had pressured the bride’s side into booking an expensive wedding venue, despite their initial plans to opt for a more affordable location. The engagement had taken place two years ago, and since then, the groom’s family had allegedly been making unreasonable demands.
The bride’s maternal uncle revealed that the groom had categorically stated that if the Thar SUV was not provided, the wedding procession would not take place. Even after multiple discussions, Rahul’s father refused to bring the baraat and told the bride’s family to do whatever they wanted.
Following the complaint, the police registered an FIR against Rahul Chauhan and his family. Authorities are now investigating the matter further.
