Improve driving licenses granting process: Minister

Saturday, 01 February 2025 | PNS | Ranchi

Transport Minister Deepak Birua said that MVIs should be careful in giving fitness and all the processes of granting driving licenses should also be followed properly so that road accidents are reduced.

Birua was speaking as the Chief Guest in the National Seminar Road Safety 2025 program organized by the Transport Department in Ranchi on Friday.

The Minister said that due to not following the process of granting driving licenses properly, many people sit on the driving seat but do not know and understand the technical things of driving, due to which they become victims of road accidents, so road accidents and driving related things will now be included in the syllabus of the students so that in future our children will be able to drive safely and better in the coming time by assimilating important things related to driving. "For this, we will talk to Chief Minister Hemant Soren. If people make road safety things a habit, then accidents will be reduced," he added.

Birua said that the way MVIs give fitness certificates without thinking or without checking or for other reasons should not happen. "This invites accidents and is a big reason for road accidents. There are many flaws on which the department should pay attention. So that road accidents in Jharkhand can be reduced," he added.

The Minister said that there is a need to spread more awareness about road safety. "It should be worked on under collective responsibility. If we look at the efforts being made in the field of road safety, then according to the statistics, the number of deaths in road accidents is high and the number of injured is low. So, the health department, engineering cell and other sectors definitely need to pay a lot of attention to this. We will try to discuss road safety related issues in the way it will be discussed today," he added.

Biruah also said that the department should adopt new methods on the important suggestions and opinions of experts and make the rules of road safety meaningful. The government will assimilate the suggestions of all of you and do better work. So that extensive work can be done on road safety, he added.

On the occasion, the Departmental Secretary Krishnanand Jha said that the rescue part should never be ignored in a road accident. "Along with a road accident, pay attention to whether the ambulance and trauma center are ready or not. If the overturned vehicle has to be cut with a gas cutter etc., then how to get the related material immediately. So that people's lives can be saved. There is a need to pay attention to these," he added.

Jha said that people face problems due to high charges of lawyers in making insurance claims. "There is a need to work together with DLSA or JHALSA on this. So that the victim's family can get relief soon in the hour of grief. The secretary said that many times people also get into accidents due to the absence of signals on the roadside. And road accidents are avoided by saying that it is due to speed. But in this, the engineer needs to pay special attention. Which signal should be installed where on the road," he added. Expressing concern under road safety, he said that it is an irony that data is not captured regarding any kind of road accident, big or small, and attention needs to be paid to this.
