Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, during his visit to Pong Dam in Kangra district on Sunday, emphasized the importance of preserving the region’s rich biodiversity while harnessing its tourism potential. Combining bird watching with a tour of the ancient temples at Bathu-Ki-Lari, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to make the area a prime destination for nature lovers and cultural tourists.
Pong Dam is a significant wintering ground for migratory birds from Siberia and Mongolia, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Recognizing its ecological importance, Sukhu directed the state Forest Department to enhance safety measures for these birds, which have become a major draw for birdwatchers. “The influx of migratory birds is not only an ecological marvel but also a key attraction for tourism. We must ensure their protection while making the region more accessible and welcoming for visitors,” he said.
The Chief Minister announced that two additional speed boats would soon be deployed alongside the existing two to facilitate tourist visits to the reservoir. He also stressed the need to develop basic amenities to improve the overall visitor experience. “With nearly 30,000 tourists visiting last year, we are optimistic that our new initiatives, including water sports activities at the Regional Water Center near Pong Dam Barrage, will boost footfall further,” he added.
During the visit, Sukhu inaugurated a Wildlife Interpretation Centre in Basa, Jawali assembly constituency, constructed at a cost of Rs 3.20 crore. The Centre, designed to educate and inspire visitors, offers dormitories and stay facilities for students, enabling them to explore and understand the region’s biodiversity. “This Centre provides a unique opportunity for young minds to learn about conservation and develop a deeper appreciation for nature,” he said, inviting schools, colleges, and nature enthusiasts to explore the area’s beauty.
Sharing data on bird arrivals, the Chief Minister noted a significant rise in numbers this season. As of December 2024, 92,885 migratory birds have been recorded at Pong Dam, with the total expected to surpass one lakh by the end of the season. By comparison, the previous year saw 85,000 birds during the entire October-to-January season. “On average, 100 species of migratory birds visit Pong Dam annually. This season, 85 species have already been observed,” he said.
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Prof Chander Kumar, Ayush Minister Yadvinder Goma, Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa, Superintendent of Police, Police Districts Nurpur and Dehra Ashok Ratan and other officers were also present.
