The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has reported cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) across several states in India. HMPV, an MRNA virus from the Pneumoviridae family, causes symptoms resembling the common cold, such as cough, congestion, fever, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia. Since there is no specific treatment, prevention remains the most effective approach, much like with COVID-19.
Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav has appealed to the public to ignore rumors and strictly follow the advisory issued by the Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare Department. She emphasized that the health department has been directed to ensure all necessary precautions and preparations to address the situation.
Residents are advised to adopt precautionary measures to stay safe. These include wearing masks in public, maintaining proper hand hygiene, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, consuming nutritious food, staying hydrated, and seeking medical advice promptly if symptoms arise.
Equally important is avoiding certain behaviors that increase risk. People are urged to stay away from crowded places unnecessarily, avoid meeting others when experiencing symptoms like cold or fever, refrain from shaking hands, and avoid spitting in public areas. Additionally, frequent touching of the face and self-medication should be avoided.
The Deputy Commissioner has assured the public that all necessary measures are being implemented. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, follow health guidelines, and work together to prevent the spread of HMPV effectively.
