Elevated road to cost Rs 500 crore

Saturday, 05 April 2025 | Pioneer News Service | New Delhi

In a major boost for thousands of residents in Sonia Vihar, north-east Delhi, the Delhi government has announced the construction of a 5.5-kilometre elevated road on the Sonia Vihar Pusta Road. The project will cost Rs 500 crore. The first capital project of the newly formed BJP government in the city is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity in the trans-Yamuna area. The elevated road will stretch from Nanak Sar Gurudwara to Shani Mandir (UP border), offering relief to thousands of daily commuters and will offer a respite from the traffic snarl.

Announcing the project, Delhi’s Public Works Department (PWD) Minister, Parvesh Verma said this project has received approval from the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. There has been a demand for widening the Sonia Vihar Pushta Road for the last several years.

The announcement came after PWD Minister Verma, along with Delhi’s Water Minister and Tourism and Culture Minister Kapil Mishra, inspected the area, including Nanaksar Gurudwara Chowk in Wazirabad, to review ongoing improvements and assess the project’s feasibility. Mishra is also the local MLA from the area.

The stretch, currently under the jurisdiction of the Flood Department, will be transferred to the PWD, which will prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and commence work at the earliest possible time. The PWD is expediting all necessary procedures to commence work at the earliest. “The local MLA and Minister Kapil Mishra has been pushing for this project. Due to the presence of many trees in the area, we have decided to construct a flyover instead of a conventional road. After discussions with the chief minister, the project has been approved, and work will commence following deliberations with the Flood Department,” Verma said. “After talks with the Chief Minister, we’ve secured approval, and work will begin once we’ve consulted the Flood Department.”

The elevated road will span from Nanaksar Gurudwara to Shani Mandir near the Uttar Pradesh border, promising relief for the countless commuters who battle gridlock daily. The route, a vital link between Sonia Vihar, Ghaziabad’s Loni, and parts of Delhi and UP, is notorious for its bottlenecks. A single carriageway cutting through densely populated unauthorised colonies and slums, the Sonia Vihar Pushta Road has long been a headache for drivers. Verma unveiled the plans after inspecting the area alongside Delhi’s Water Minister and Tourism and Culture Minister, Kapil Mishra, who also serves as the MLA for Karawal Nagar, which includes Sonia Vihar. The pair visited Nanaksar Gurudwara Chowk in Wazirabad to assess ongoing upgrades and the project’s viability. Mishra hailed the development as a triumph for the region. “The BJP government is moving at a cracking pace, and this project proves it,” he said. “This road has been a massive problem for trans-Yamuna residents, and today, we’ve sorted it. Hundreds of thousands rely on this route every day.”

The Sonia Vihar Pushta Road has grown into a key artery for those travelling from Sonia Vihar and Ghaziabad’s Loni Tranica City to Baghpat Baraut, as well as for locals heading to other parts of Delhi. With the population of Sonia Vihar Colony—stretching across Pushtas one to five—booming in recent years, the need for better infrastructure has become urgent. Once completed, the flyover is expected to transform life for commuters in one of Delhi’s most gridlocked corners, marking a significant win for the area’s long-suffering residents.
