First-time MLA Rekha Gupta sworn as Delhi's ninth Chief Minister on Thursday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda, and Chief Ministers and Deputy CMs of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-ruled States.
Choudhary Braham Prakash from the Congress was the first chief minister of Delhi. He was the Chief Minister from March 17, 1952 to February 12, 1955. He was the Chief Minister for two years and 332 days. He had represented Nangloi Jat constituency.
Gurmukh Nihal Singh who represented from Darya Ganj constituency, was the second chief minister between February 12, 1955 and November 1, 1956. He had served as CM for one year and 263 days.
The Legislative Assembly of Delhi was first constituted on 17 March 1952 under the Government of Part C States Act, 1951, but it was abolished on 1 October 1956. The legislative assembly of Delhi was re-established on January 2, 1992, following the enforcement of the Constitution (Sixty-ninth Amendment) Act, 1991, and the subsequent Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991.
In 1993, Madan Lal Khurana, known as "Delhi ka Sher" (Lion of Delhi), became the first Chief Minister after the state Legislative Assembly was reinstated through the 69th Constitution Amendment Act, 1991. BJP had won 49 of the 70 seats, while Congress secured 14. Khurana's tenure was short lived.
However, in 1995, his name was linked to the infamous Hawala scandal, and he stepped down after 27 months due to corruption allegations.
After his resignation in 1996, Sahib Singh Verma replaced as the new Chief Minister.
He remained as the Chief Minister for more than 31 months and forced to step down just months before the 1998 elections due to controversy over onion price hike.
