More than 50 prominent leaders on Wednesday, who are in the fray for the high-octane Delhi assembly elections, including BJP’s Kalkaji candidate Ramesh Bidhuri, BJP’s New Delhi candidate Parvesh Saheb Singh Verma, AAP’s Jangpura candidate Manish Sisodia and Congress' Badli candidate Devendra Yadav entered the election battle officially as they filed their nomination papers.
Many leaders also took part in religious activites and also held roadshows before filing their nominations. Before submitting their nominations, BJP leaders Vijender Gupta, Satish Upadhyay, Parvesh Verma, and Ajay Mahawar stepped up their electoral campaigns with roadshows and rallies.
Verma worshipped at Gauri Shankar temple in Chandni Chowk along with his wife before taking on a foot march to Jamnagar House from his Windsor Place residence for filing his nomination papers from New Delhi constituency.
Meanwhile, Gupta accompanied by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and the party workers performed a 'havan' and then moved to file his nomination papers from Rohini seat in a procession. Throughout the rally, the crowd chanted slogans such as ‘Jai Shri Ram’, ‘Narendra Modi Zindabad’, ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’, and ‘Ab Nahi Sahenge, Badalkar Rahenge’, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere.
Former Delhi Minister and BJP candidate from Bijwasan seat, Kailash Gahlot, offered prayers at Shri Hari Mandir in Vasant Kunj before going to file his nomination. BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri joined a march that began from the EWS flats in Kalkaji built for rehabilitated slum dwellers.
Satish Upadhyay, BJP candidate running from the Malviya Nagar Assembly seat, expressed his gratitude and optimism during the rally. He said, "I am grateful that MP Bansuri Swaraj, my amily, and my friends are all here in my support as I file my nomination today. Even amid this cold wave and dense fog, as you can see, people and my party workers are here in full force. This shows and assures that the lotus is blooming, and BJP is coming to Delhi," he said.
Bansuri Swaraj shared her support for Upadhyay and said,"On February 5, press the lotus symbol and make Satish Upadhyay the winner. We assure you that we will change the fate of Malviya Nagar and work toward its development."
BJP candidate Dushyant Singh Gautam, contesting from Karol Bagh, also held a roadshow ahead of filing his nomination at the SDM office in Jhandewalan, Delhi. He was accompanied by Haryana Chief Minister Nawab Singh Saini during his rally ahead of nomination filing.
Manoj Tiwari, along with BJP candidate Ajay Mahawar, held a rally in Yamuna Vihar before Mahawar filed his nomination for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Mahawar expressed confidence in the BJP’s success, saying, "This time, the BJP will win with a full majority, and we are receiving complete cooperation from the people."
Manoj Tiwari also shared his optimism about the party's prospects, and said, "We are filing nominations for approximately 38 seats, and now I am here with Ajay Mahawar, who is going to file his nomination. We performed a 'hawan' ceremony, seeking the blessings of the gods. This nomination will bring happiness to the people of Delhi, as the city has long been suppressed under corruption. This is the right time for change. In the Gonda constituency, all problems and issues will be addressed. We want the support and blessings of the people. Press the lotus button."
Taking a dig at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he said, "There is a wave in Delhi, and Arvind Kejriwal continues to lie, despite being ineligible to hold the position of Chief Minister. Delhi is watching all these lies. The people of Delhi will decide their fate, and a BJP's double-engine government will be formed."
Several AAP candidates also filed their nomination with senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia visiting a temple and holding a roadshow before filing his nomination for the Jangpura Assembly seat. The former deputy chief minister sought blessings at the Angoori Mata Mandir in Kilokri before starting his roadshow. Under the banner "Bhai Ho To Aisa, Kejriwal Jaisa," Sisodia launched his roadshow.
Further, former Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain also filed his nomination papers from the Shakur Basti Assembly seat after holding a roadshow with MP Sanjay Singh and former MP Dr. Sushil Gupta.
The Congress has pinned its hopes on leaders such as Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav who will contest from Badli taking on AAP's Ajesh Yadav and BJP's Deepak Chaudhary.
The BJP has so far declared the names of 59 candidates for the polls, while the names of 11 candidates are yet to be announced. The nomination process for the Delhi Assembly elections began on January 10, and the last date for submission is January 17, 2025. As of now, 85 nominations have been filed, with 20 submissions made on January 13 alone.
Voting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly is scheduled to be held on February 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on February 8.
