In a surprise move, the Uttar Pradesh government, on Thursday, changed the name of Crime Branch, Crime Investigation Department (CBCID) to Crime Investigation Department (CID).
This decision has been taken by the government with the aim of making the crime investigation system more effective and simple. In the order issued by the Home Department (Police) of the state government, it has been clarified that from now on CBCID will be known as CID. The change of name will come into effect with immediate effect.
The main function of this important department of Uttar Pradesh Police is to conduct in-depth investigation of crimes, forensic analysis, identification of criminals and investigation of organised crimes.
The government communique said that the change of name will bring transparency and clarity in the functioning of the department, which will help the public and police personnel to understand the role of the department.
The administrative and legal proceedings of the department will continue as before, only the name has been changed.
Governor Anandiben Patel has given her approval to this change.
According to the order signed by Special Secretary (Home) Rakesh Kumar Malpani, this change will be effective from March 16, 2025.
Experts believe that due to the complexity of the term CBCID, there was confusion among the people, but the name CID is much simpler and widely accepted. This will strengthen the identity of the department and increase coordination and effectiveness in the investigation process.
Through this decision, the state government has tried to strengthen the crime investigation system and give a new identity to the department. Now it remains to be seen what effect this change has on crime control and investigation processes, they added.
