A five and a half year old girl suffering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) disease has been admitted to a private hospital in Ranchi. The girl has been kept on ventilator support.
The Doctor who is treating the girl said that there is no need to panic about this disease, but caution and timely treatment is the only way to prevent it.
Child specialist Dr Rajesh, who is treating the girl suffering from GBS, said that about eight days ago a couple brought this girl, then the condition of the girl was very serious and she was not able to move. "There was also difficulty in breathing but the girl was given ventilator support by giving IVIG and methyl prednisolone medicine. At present, the condition of the girl is stable. Now she is opening her eyes. The condition of the girl is better than before, but she is not able to recover," he added.
Doctor Rajesh told that this is not a rare disease. "GBS is an autoimmune neurological disorder. The immune system attacks the nerves of its own body. Due to this, the patient has trouble walking and breathing. This is a danger to children and the elderly," he added.
The Doctor said that when the girl was brought, the severity of the disease was estimated by looking at the symptoms. He said that at that time he had informed the Civil Surgeon of Ranchi as well as a representative of WHO present in Lucknow.
Dr Rajesh told that if any child or elderly person complains of difficulty in walking and weakness, then immediately go to the doctor because this disease attacks the nerves very fast, so timely treatment is necessary.
GBS is a disease whose exact cause is not known at present. However, it usually occurs after infection. In this, the immune system of the body mistakenly attacks the nerves. It can also damage the nervous system. Its first symptom is tingling in the hands and feet. These sensations can spread rapidly and in severe cases can lead to paralysis. There is no cure for it yet but treating the symptoms can speed up the patient's recovery. GBS is believed to occur when the immunity power is low.
A patient infected with GBS has diarrhea, stomach pain, fever and vomiting. This disease can also be caused by contaminated water or food.
Generally doctors recommend boiling water before drinking it. Apart from this, open or stale food should not be eaten. If someone feels weakness along with muscle strain, then one should immediately consult a doctor.
