1,656 lives lost in road accidents across MP: CM

Monday, 24 March 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

A total of 1,656 people have lost their lives in road accidents across Madhya Pradesh over the past one and a half months, with 202 fatalities reported along the MP border during the Prayagraj Mahakumbh. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav provided this information while responding to a question raised by MLA Dinesh Rai Munmun in the State Assembly.

According to Chief Minister Dr. Yadav, the deceased included 1,444 men, 50 women, and 8 children. He emphasized that a significant number of these fatalities could have been prevented with proper safety measures, as 152 people died due to not wearing helmets, while 26 lost their lives for failing to wear seat belts.

Providing further details, Yadav informed the Assembly that 552 road accidents occurred on the MP border during the same period, resulting in injuries to 944 people. Notably, only one accident was caused by drunk driving, although it did not result in any fatalities.

According to data from 2022, Madhya Pradesh ranks second in the country for the highest number of road accident deaths.

The Chief Minister highlighted overspeeding as the leading cause of these tragic incidents, accounting for 1,026 deaths. Additionally, 40 people died due to violations of traffic rules, and 56 fatalities occurred at black spots—accident-prone areas identified by the authorities.

To curb road accidents, the state government is focusing on enforcing traffic regulations and raising public awareness. Dr. Yadav stressed the importance of wearing helmets and seat belts, adhering to speed limits, and following traffic rules diligently.

“By ensuring compliance with traffic regulations and promoting road safety awareness, we can prevent a significant number of these tragic accidents,” Dr. Yadav asserted.

The government continues to implement awareness campaigns and enforcement measures to reduce road fatalities and ensure safer travel across the state.
