The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday said over 4,100 of its electoral registration officers are holding all-party meetings to resolve pending polling booth level issues in their respective assembly seats.
The meetings are in line with the poll body’s recent decision to hold interactions with parties at multiple levels in the state to resolve complaints.
Several political parties have accused the EC of fudging electoral data to benefit the BJP. Parties including the Trinamool Congress had flagged voter cards with duplicate numbers.
The EC now has decided to explore possibility of linking voter cards with Aadhaar and involve birth and death registration authorities to clean up voter rolls.
According to a press release issued by the EC, 4,123 EROs across the country are holding all-party meetings to resolve any pending polling booth level issues
in their respective Assembly Constituencies (ACs).
Similarly all 788 District Election Officers (DEOs) and 36 CEOs of all 28 States and 8 UTs at the State/UT levels have also been directed to hold such meetings to resolve any pending issues at the district and State/UT levels respectively, within the legal framework of the RP Act 1950 and 1951, Registration of Elector Rules 1960, Conduct of Election Rules 1961 and the manuals, guidelines and instructions issued by EC from time to time.
“This grassroots-level engagement has been welcomed by political parties, with their active and enthusiastic participation in meetings across assembly constituencies, districts, and states/UTs. The Commission appeals to all the national/state political parties to avail this proactive grassroot level engagement with electoral authorities” it said.
