A Kashmiri at Maha Kumbh

Maha Kumbh is a deeply immersive experience, a transformative journey like no other

As a Kashmiri Muslim, I, Jehanzeb Allaqaband, had heard of the Maha Kumbh Mela but never imagined experiencing it. In 2025, my friend Yuvraj Srivastava invited me to witness the event in Prayagraj, and what was meant to be a two-day visit turned into an unforgettable week. The spiritual energy and unity of the gathering left me deeply moved, and I didn’t want to leave, though prior commitments forced me to return home. The Kumbh Mela was a unique blend of ancient rituals and modern technology.

The event attracted millions of pilgrims and was especially significant due to a rare cosmic alignment. It was more than just a religious event; it was an experience of learning, connection and respect for all cultures. I was struck by the seamless combination of tradition and innovation, such as AI being used to manage crowds and sustainability efforts. The efforts of the Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were impressive. The cleanliness, security and hospitality were top-notch. I was particularly moved by the creation of a temporary city for the pilgrims, with 150,000 tents, medical camps and free healthcare. When I fell ill, I received prompt treatment without charge.

One remarkable initiative was the “Vidya Kumbh” project, which provided free education to the children of 15,000 sanitation workers. This showed the administration’s commitment to both the event and the well-being of the workers’ families. As a Kashmiri Muslim, I was warmly welcomed by the pilgrims, and the sense of unity and brotherhood was palpable.

The experience left a lasting impression on me, strengthening my belief in the power of faith and unity. My time at the Maha Kumbh Mela was a life-changing experience. As a social activist, I am committed to applying the lessons of spirituality, unity, and service to humanity within my community. The event’s success under Yogi Adityanath’s leadership is a model of effective public administration, showing how large-scale gatherings can honour tradition while embracing progress.

Indeed, Maha Kumbh is not just a religious congregation; it is a symbol of unity, inclusivity and spiritual awakening. Held once every twelve years, this grand event draws millions of people from across the world, transcending barriers of caste, creed, nationality and social status. From ascetics and spiritual seekers to scholars, pilgrims, and tourists, everyone comes together in pursuit of divine blessings, wisdom, and self-discovery.

At its core, Maha Kumbh embodies the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—”the world is one family.” It fosters an environment where people from diverse backgrounds coexist in harmony, sharing prayers, knowledge and experiences. The sacred rivers become the melting pot of traditions, where faith unites humanity beyond differences. It is a place where the rich and the poor, the learned and the unlettered, stand side by side, immersed in devotion and introspection. Beyond its spiritual significance, Maha Kumbh serves as a cultural confluence, bringing together art, philosophy, and age-old traditions. It is a global event where seekers of truth and wisdom are welcomed with open arms. Maha Kumbh is for all—an enduring testament to inclusivity, faith, and the boundless spirit of togetherness that defines humanity.
