With controversy surrounding former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence at 6, Flag Staff Road, vigilance department has asked the PWD to investigate four points, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta said on Thursday.
Stating this in his press note, he said the four points include: identify who provided the luxurious items at Kejriwal’s residence. Determine whether anyone benefited in exchange for these items. Thirdly, assess the impact on public funds and verify if any government protocols or regulations were violated. Lastly, include any other relevant information that may aid in clarifying the matter.
The press note said acting on a letter written by Gupta to Delhi's Lieutenant Governor on November 20, 2024, seeking a high-level investigation into the discovery of numerous expensive luxury items at Kejriwal’s official residence, the Lieutenant Governor took cognizance and directed the Vigilance Department to investigate the matter on December 6. Subsequently, the Vigilance Department instructed the Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out the investigation. Also, Vigilance Department has asked the PWD to submit a report within five days, Gupta said.
In his letter to the Lieutenant Governor, Gupta stated that discrepancies were found between the items provided by the PWD to Kejriwal’s residence in 2022, when he assumed office as Chief Minister for the second time, and the items left behind by him after stepping down in 2024.
Gupta alleged that while PWD provided certain furniture and amenities in 2022, an inventory check conducted by PWD after Kejriwal vacated the bungalow in 2024 revealed the presence of many additional luxurious items not supplied by the department.
These included luxury toilet seats, expensive wash basins, reclining sofas, costly curtains, premium carpets, high-value TV sets, and refrigerators.
Gupta further claimed that according to 2022 documents from PWD, no new items were supplied to the residence after that year. He alleged that between 2022 and 2024, Kejriwal enjoyed palace-like luxury amenities funded by individuals who benefited from his new liquor policy.
