Two men were arrested and more than 104 kilograms of firecrackers were seized from their possession in outer Delhi’s Sultan Puri.

According to the police on Tuesday, a police team received a tip-off that a man would transport firecrackers concealed under food items in Sultan Puri area’s Budh Bazar road.

DCP Outer Delhi Sachin Sharma said, “On Sunday, a case under sections of 288 (Negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of BNS and 9-B Explosive Act was registered at Sultan Puri police station. A total of 104.200 kg banned fire crackers recovered along with one motor cycle used in the commission of crime.”

Based on the tip-off the team intercepted a motorcycle and apprehended the 24 year old driver Mohammad Aakib. “At approximately 12:15 PM, they spotted a suspect riding a motorcycle bearing registration No. DL 11S C 8798. Acting on the tip, the team intercepted the motorcycle and apprehended the rider.

Upon inspection of a white plastic bag on the motorcycle, it was found to contain food items like rusk, fan, and matthi, under which 10.300 kg of banned firecrackers were concealed,” the DCP added.

During interrogation, Aakib revealed that he had procured the firecrackers from a warehouse owned by a 46 years old Talib Yusuf.

“Acting on this information, the police team conducted a raid at B-709, Aman Vihar, Rohini, and apprehended Talib Yusuf based on Aakib’s statement. From his warehouse, 93.900 kg of banned firecrackers were seized,” the officer said.

He added that both suspects confessed to attempting to sell the firecrackers during the festive season for quick financial gain.
