A thief caught red handed, escaped with a gold chain after attacking passengers with a sharp edged weapon in the Patliputra Super Express between Itarsi and Bhusawal in the night on Wednesday.
The thief trying to steal a bag in a moving train was caught red handed. The passengers beat him and then tied his hands. When the matter of calling the police came up, the thief begged and said - there is no employment. If we don't steal for livelihood, should we die?
In the middle of the conversation, he managed to free his hands. He immediately took out a knife from his pocket and attacked himself and when a passenger came to stop him, he attacked him. When the passenger's mother came forward to intervene, he snatched the mangalsutra from her neck and escaped away.
The incident was reported on the night of November 11 in Patliputra Super Express between Itarsi and Bhusaval. Passengers also made a video of it on their mobile. Bhusaval GRP filed an FIR and transferred the case diary to Itarsi GRP on Wednesday night. Posters have been printed in search of the thief.
According to the police, Rakesh Jaiswal works as a welder in the Dhobi Ghat area of Mumbai. On 11th November, he was travelling to Mumbai from Pandit Deendayal Railway Station with his mother, wife and children. He had a reservation in sleeper coach S1 of Pataliputra Super Express.
It had been half an hour since the train left Itarsi. The passengers were asleep. Meanwhile, a thief tried to steal Rakesh Jaiswal's bag. He woke up and raised an alarm. Other passengers caught the thief. They beat him up. Then they took off his shirt and tied his hands with it and made him sit down.
After beating the thief, the passengers tied his hands and made him sit down.
During the questioning, the passengers slapped the thief again. This caused his wig to fall off. In the tug of war, the thief freed his hands. Then he took out a knife and started hitting himself. Seeing this, all the passengers moved away from him. When Rakesh moved forward to stop him, he started attacking him with a knife. Then he pulled out his mother's mangalsutra from her neck and ran away showing the knife.
When the train reached Bhusaval, the passengers complained to GRP about the theft of Mangalsutra and stabbing.
Itarsi GRP station in-charge RS Chauhan said " the video of the incident and the photos of the thief have been sent to other police stations across the country. The language in which the thief was talking is spoken from Jabalpur-Satna to Allahabad".
